Statement by Secretary Sebelius on National Girls & Women in Sports Day
On National Girls & Women in Sports Day, we celebrate the tens of millions of female athletes across the country, from the top professionals representing the United States at the Winter Olympics to the five-year-olds playing their first game of tee ball. As a former college athlete and enthusiastic runner, I know that playing sports has many benefits. It keeps us fit. It teaches us discipline and teamwork. And most important, it’s a lot of fun. Today, we recognize the great achievements of women in sports and recommit ourselves to making sure these opportunities are available to every girl and boy.
